Ok, this is ultra easy, yet some people still ask for this kinda stuff.
This is for people without a clue about installing minecraft.
Programmers/Smart-arses stay away lol

Replace/Fix:

Home+R to Run console
Type %appdata%
Open your minecraft folder
Search for the "bin" folder
Replace the minecraft.jar for a brand new minecraft.jar from the same version

--If you reinstall with an auto installer might get your saves and screenshots erased--
---IF you are going to install mods, remember to erase the META-INF folder inside the minecraft.jar (explore it with 7Zip or WinRar)---

Backup:

Home+R to Run console
Type %appdata%
Open your minecraft folder
Choose your savegame in "saves" folder and copy it into a custom folder
Same with "screenshots" folder.

Install:
Just download the TE Installer of the server's current version

--To have two updates (e.g: 1.5.1 and 1.4.7), do this:

Copy the 1.4.7 .jar, and change its name for "minecraft1.jar" (not case sensitive)
Update the current minecraft.jar to 1.5.1
Now, to switch between versions you just have to change the name of both .jars ( "minecraft1.jar" to "minecraft.jar", "minecraft.jar" to "minecraft1.jar")
Now you can play TE and other LAN servers by changing the name of the file, instead of replacing the whole folder.
(It's a bit annoying to change the name, but its a bit easier than reinstalling the whole thing)

NO dumbish stuff please

You can google the file, or download the official TE client here: http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/7845502
But if your PC or video card are too old, then it probably will never run unless you update your hardware.

Then it might be a problem with your PC's installation, try following the steps I gave you and if they doesn't work maybe you'll have to reinstall your OS.
Or update your Java before taking a step that big. :)
