Total Money taken = $100($50+$50)

Now,

Bag's Price = $ 97

Remaining Amount = $100 - $97

= $ 3

Returned = $ 1 + $ 1

=$2

In pocket = $1

Total money owed = $100- ( Returned amount)

= $98( Bag's amount and reserved amount)

It's just a matter of tricking you - there's no problem or missing money, just that the riddle defines one sum as something else.

If the brother and the sister gave you each 49$ since you gave each 1$ already, that means they gave you a total of 98$. 97$ for the clothes, 1$ is what YOU had at the end.

the 98$ already covers the 1$ you had at the end and the missing 2$ were split to the brother and sister.

Goodbye.

i mean.. where is 1$ if i add 1$ to that final amount? it suppose to be 100$ not 99$ :P

Bad math. That's all this "riddle" is about.

You have borrowed 100 => you have 100 and need to return 100, so 100 - 100 = 0

You spent 97 => you have 3 and need to return 100, so 3 - 100 = -97.

You returned 2 => you have 1 and need to return 98, so 1 - 98 = -97.

The mistake done in your "riddle" is that you consider debt and what you currently have as being the same sign.

If you don't understand the math above, here's the version focused on debt.

You borrowed 100 => you have 100 and your debt is 100.

You spent 97 => you have 3 and your debt is 100.

You returned 2 => you have 1 and your debt is 98.

You added 98 with 1. As you can notice, the values on left don't really matter to the debt. That's what money you have, and is independent from what you need to return. If you want, when you have 1 left, you get 50$ from your mom, so you have 51 and your debt is 98. Does that mean that you need to return 149$? No.
